Project Description

ALEXIS RAGO | CHAOS CONTAINED

Client:  National Centre for Craft and Design

Alexis Rago uses clay as his primary means of expression at the extreme of its possibilities. The fragile and intricate sculptures addressing issues of balance and symmetry, are designed to invite close scrutiny. I wish to draw viewers into a live negotiation with the precariousness of the forms as a preface to other conversations.

Born from curator Laura Mabbutt’s first encounter with Alexis’ work in 2009, Chaos Contained explores the inherent qualities she first saw then: those of a magical combination of technical skill, knowledge of his material, conceptual integrity and an eye for visual impact.

The show takes the form of an immersive installation exploring ideas from life sciences, evolution, anthropology and sacred art. The exhibition also incorporates the innovative integration of digital media, something new to Rago’s practice and a key contributor to this exhibition’s impact.

We were honoured to be commissioned by The National Centre for Craft and Design to produce a film for Alexis and his exhibition. After initial discussions, we were invited to meet Alexis at his home studio and we were truly in awe. He resides in a grade II listed chapel filled with the most wonderful artworks produced by himself and his wife Janet. The space is warm, inspiring and bursting with character.

We knew straight away if we simply spent a day with Alexis and his wife in their beautiful home, we would capture all the material we need to produce a great documentary film. And so, we did just that. Alexis discussed his ethos, inspiration and ideas and showed us his processes. After the first edit was drafted, we invited Alexis and Janet to our studio to view it and they loved it.

The film went on to receive a fantastic response at the exhibition launch and beyond. The film has now been used extensively online and continues to be the topic of conversation years later. We can honestly say this film is still one of our favourites and we absolutely loved every moment working on it.

Testimonial:

“I was so pleased to have found Know Media to create the Alexis Rago documentary for us at a very reasonable price. They were a pleasure to work with and produced a stunning film for the NCCD that was a key part of Alexis Rago’s solo show. Many visitors commented on how beautiful the film was and we feel that it was an essential part of the interpretation for visitors to understand Alexi’s complex work in an accessible way. Alexis also enjoyed working with Luke and his team when they visited his studio to film, and their personable attitude no doubt helped in encouraging Alexis’s explanation about his work to the camera.” – Laura Mabbutt, National Centre for Craft and Design.
